Lesson 7: Creation and the Fall

English Passage
The account of the fall in Genesis uses figurative language, but affirms a primeval event, a deed that took place at the beginning of the history of man. Revelation gives us the certainty of faith that the whole of human history is marked by the original fault freely committed by our first parents. Behind the disobedient choice of our first parents lurks a seductive voice, opposed to God, which makes them fall into death out of envy. Scripture and the Church‘s Tradition see in this being a fallen angel, called “Satan” or the “devil.” The Church teaches that Satan was at first a good angel, made by God: “The devil and the other demons were indeed created naturally good by God, but they became evil by their own doing.”
Man, tempted by the devil, let his trust in his Creator die in his heart and, abusing his freedom, disobeyed God’s commandment. This is what man‘s first sin consisted of. All subsequent sin would be disobedience toward God and lack of trust in his goodness. In that sin man preferred himself to God and by that very act scorned him. He chose himself over and against God, against the requirements of his creaturely status and therefore against his own good. Constituted in a state of holiness, man was destined to be fully “divinized” by God in glory. Seduced by the devil, he wanted to “be like God,” but without God, before God, and not in accordance with God. This “fall” consists in the free choice of these created spirits and humans, who rejected God and his kingdom.

創世記の堕落の記述は比喩的な言語を用いていますが、人間の歴史の始まりに起こった太古の出来事、一つの行為を肯定しています。啓示は、人類の歴史全体が、私たちの始祖によって自由に犯された最初の過ちによって特徴づけられているという信仰の確信を与えてくれます。始祖の不従順な選択の背後には、神に敵対し、嫉妬から彼らを死へと突き落とす誘惑の声が潜んでいます。聖書と教会の伝承は、この存在を「サタン」あるいは「悪魔」と呼ばれる堕落した天使と見なしています。教会は、サタンも元々は神によって造られた善い天使であったと教えています。「悪魔やその他の悪霊たちは、神によって本来は善いものとして造られましたが、自らの行いによって悪くなったのです。」
悪魔に誘惑された人間は、造り主への信頼を心の中で死なせ、自由を乱用して神の掟に背きました。これが人間の最初の罪の本質です。それ以降のすべての罪は、神への不従順と、神の慈しみに対する信頼の欠如となります。その罪において、人間は神よりも自分自身を優先させ、その行為そのものによって神を軽んじました。人間は神に逆らって自分自身を選び、被造物としての地位が求めるものに反し、したがって自分自身の善にも反したのです。聖なる状態で構成されていた人間は、栄光のうちに神によって完全に「神化」されるはずでした。悪魔にそそのかされた彼は「神のようになりたい」と望みましたが、それは神なしで、神を差し置いて、神に従わない形での望みでした。この「堕落」は、神とその御国を拒絶した、これら造られた霊的存在と人間による自由な選択にあるのです。

Misreading
「fall」を単なる「落下」や「秋」とし、「kingdom」を「中世の王国」のような地理的な領土と捉えてしまう。
Correction
教会英語で fall といえば、人類の始祖が罪を犯した「堕落」を指す固有名詞的な表現です。これによって人間（man）の性質が損なわれたとされます。また、kingdom は王様が統治する領土というよりは、神の主権が及ぶ「統治・支配（御国）」という霊的な状態を指しています。これらは revelation（啓示）によって示された、人類の歴史を決定づけるメタ史実として記述されています。
