Lesson 6: The Holy Trinity

The Trinity is One. We do not confess three Gods, but one God in three persons, the “consubstantial Trinity.” The divine persons do not share the one divinity among themselves but each of them is God whole and entire: “The Father is that which the Son is, the Son that which the Father is, the Father and the Son that which the Holy Spirit is, i.e. by nature one God.” In the words of the Fourth Lateran Council: “Each of the persons is that supreme reality, viz., the divine substance, essence or nature.” Because it does not divide the divine unity, the real distinction of the persons from one another resides solely in the relationships which relate them to one another.
“In the relational names of the persons the Father is related to the Son, the Son to the Father, and the Holy Spirit to both. While they are called three persons in view of their relations, we believe in one nature or substance.” Indeed, “everything in them is one where there is no opposition of relationship.” Because of that unity, the Father is wholly in the Son and wholly in the Holy Spirit; the Son is wholly in the Father and wholly in the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit is wholly in the Father and wholly in the Son. This is the mystery of the internal life of the Trinity, to which man is called to adhere by faith. The whole history of salvation is identical with the history of the way and the means by which the one true God reveals himself to men and reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin.

三位一体は唯一です。私たちは3柱の神を告白するのではなく、三つの位格における唯一の神、「同本質の三位一体」を告白します。神の位格たちは、唯一の神性を分かち合っているのではなく、その各々が完全に神なのです。「父がそうであるところのものを子は持っており、子がそうであるところのものを父は持っており、父と子がそうであるところのものを聖霊は持っています。すなわち、本性において唯一の神なのです。」第4ラテラン公会議の言葉によれば、「位格の各々は、あの至高の実在、すなわち神の実体、本質、あるいは本性そのもの」なのです。神の統一性を分割しないため、位格相互の真の区別は、それらを結びつける関係性の中にのみ存在します。
「位格の相対的な名称において、父は子に対して、子は父に対して、聖霊はその両者に対して関係づけられています。関係の観点からは三つの位格と呼ばれますが、私たちは唯一の本性、すなわち実体を信じるのです。」実に、「関係の対立がない限り、彼ら（三位）においてすべては一つ」なのです。その統一性のゆえに、父は完全に子のうちに、また完全に聖霊のうちにおられます。子は完全に父のうちに、また完全に聖霊のうちにおられます。聖霊は完全に父のうちに、また完全に子のうちにおられます。これが三位一体の内的な生命の神秘であり、人間は信仰によってこれに従うよう招かれています。救いの歴史全体は、唯一の真なる神がご自身を人々に現し、罪から離れる人々をご自分と和解させ、結びつける方法と手段の歴史そのものなのです。

Misreading
「persons」を「（3人の）人間」と捉えたり、「substance」を「物質」や「中身」と解釈してしまう。
Correction
三位一体論での persons は、個別の人間（people）のことではなく、唯一の神における3つの「位格」を指す超自然的な用語です。また、substance や essence は、科学的な「物質」ではなく、神が神であるゆえんの「実体・本質」を意味します。神は一つの nature（本性）を持ち、3つの persons が互いの「関係性」においてのみ区別されるという、極めて厳密な哲学・神学的定義で語られています。
